								<description>Knoxville, Tennessee,  Position:  Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Tenured Associate Professor,  Biosystems Engineering &#38; Soil Science &#xa0;(BESS). This is a full-time, 12-month, 100% Extension appointment. 
 Overview:  The University of Tennessee Extension is a strong educational and research partner in the effort to improve row crop production systems. The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized Extension and applied research Precision Agriculture Technology Program. Specific areas of emphasis could include but are not limited to Precision Agriculture Machinery, Sensing and Control Systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and Autonomous Agriculture Systems. 
 Primary Responsibilities: 
 
 Develop, deliver and evaluate an Extension Program in the area of Precision Agriculture Technology that focuses on row crop production systems. This Program will employ innovative teaching strategies and methodologies adapted to diverse audiences including agricultural producers, Extension Agents and Specialist, professional consultants, as well as state, regional, national, and international leaders. 
 Acquire extramural funding to develop &#38; deliver a Precision Agriculture Technology Extension Program. 
 Acquire extramural funding to support a Precision Agriculture Technology applied research Program that includes the training of BESS graduate students and peer-reviewed publication of research results. 
 Publish peer reviewed Extension and journal articles as well as BESS Extension fact sheets. 
 Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment with BESS Research and Extension faculty and professional partners to translate and teach advancements in Precision Agriculture Technologies. 
 Collaboratively develop and field test or demonstrate Precision Agriculture technologies. Focus areas could include but are not limited to crop sensing systems, &#8220;smart&#8221; sprayers/applicators for nutrients, herbicides, and pesticides, and field mapping and yield monitoring systems developed to improve the efficiency, resilience and sustainability of row crop production systems. 
 Collaboratively develop and evaluate &#8220;smart&#8221; machinery systems such as planters, nutrient applicators, herbicide/pesticide sprayers, harvesters, and other advanced row crop management equipment. 
 Develop collaborative and advisory relationships with agricultural producers, BESS Research and Extension faculty, Extension Agents, and equipment manufacturers to improve the efficiency, resilience and sustainability of row crop production systems using Precision Agriculture Technologies. 
 Provide leadership to state-level 4-H youth programs, including the 4-H Electric Camp. 
 Participate in the service activities of the Department, Institute, University and profession. 
 Qualifications: &#xa0; Ph.D. in Biosystems, Biological, or Agricultural Engineering preferred; Ph.D. in other disciplines will be considered only if the applicant has a BS or MS degree in Engineering. Required terminal degree research focus on Precision Agriculture Technologies and/or demonstrated development of an extramurally-funded Extension/Research Program in Precision Agriculture Technologies. The successful candidate will have excellent analytical and communication skills, a willingness to work in multidisciplinary teams and an understanding Precision Agriculture Technologies applied to row crop production systems. Professional Engineer license/license eligibility is desired.

 Earned doctoral degree in Animal or Veterinary Science, Agricultural Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a closely related field at the time of employment at the University of Tennessee. Interested in developing or applying precision technologies to beef cattle systems. Research program emphasis in the areas of beef cattle production, such as herd health, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, genetic improvement, or precision management. Possesses advanced training in data science or experience in statistics. Individual must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. They should also have or be willing to develop a passion for beef cattle-focused research and applications of statistics and data science to animal agriculture. To be considered for the rank of endowed associate or full professor, the candidate must have a proven record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals, successes in obtaining extramural grant and contract funding to support research efforts, a passionate teacher, and effectively mentoring graduate students that are worthy of the respective rank. All applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a long-term basis. Responsibilities and Expectations:&#xa0;  
 
 9-month, tenure-track position with 85% Research and 15% Teaching responsibilities 
 Establish an independent, nationally recognized research program (basic and/or applied) in the area of Precision Beef Systems, with emphasis on any area of beef production that would benefit Tennessee, US, and global livestock industries. This could include herd health, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, genetic improvement, precision management, applied data science, or artificial intelligence. 
 Form collaborative research partnerships with faculty within and outside the university, especially in association with the new Hickman Precision Agriculture Technology Unit and Precision Livestock Farming Program ( https://plf.tennessee.edu/ ) 
 Develop an extramurally funded, nationally recognized research program 
 Be prolific in scholarly publications and presentations 
 Successfully mentor undergraduate and graduate student research assistants 
 Teach one graduate-level course on Experimental Design (ANSC 571) per year 
 Participate in other activities of the Department of Animal Science such as committee service and recruitment 
 
 Research efforts may integrate any type of experimental data or techniques related to the applicant&#39;s interests, possibly including sensor development &#38; deployment, &#8220;omics&#8221; data, high-throughput phenotyping, machine learning applications, or data science/management, into data-driven solutions for beef production systems. Research can focus on various beef-related challenges such as herd health, genetic improvement, precision management, environmental sustainability, and/or climate resilience. Individuals having interests in an area including but not limited to Data Science, Animal Genomics, Reproduction, Nutrition, Health-Epidemiology, Statistics, or Bioinformatics would fit well within existing groups of Animal Science faculty.  *a 30-week minimum commitment is required* Location:  Cumberland Gap National Historical Park - Middlesboro, KY Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is located at the corners of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The Park contains 24,000 acres of which 14,000 acres are proposed wilderness. The natural beauty of Appalachian mountain country, lush with vegetation, supports a diverse flora and fauna. Cumberland Gap has 70 miles of hiking trails, mountains, streams, and caves. Middlesboro, Kentucky is the nearest town and is large enough to accommodate three grocery stores, fast food, several restaurants, and a movie theater. Knoxville, Tennessee is approximately 1.5 hours away and has many amenities of a large city. For more information regarding Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, or the National Park Service, please visit:  http://www.nps.gov/cuga/index.htm Position Description:  The ACE member will assist the Cumberland Gap&#39;s Resource Management staff in accomplishing a variety of tasks. The member will spend the majority of their time in the field performing physically demanding tasks as assigned. Approximately 75 - 80% of the fieldwork will be Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) control; duties will also include exotic plant management and other invasive species work. 
 &#xa0; 
 This project is very physically demanding . In order to perform Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) control, the ACE member must be very comfortable navigating off trail in the backcountry using GPS. Backcountry camping in a team of two will be required. This treatment is performed off-trail and requires bushwhacking through rhododendron, mountain laurel, and greenbrier up-and-down steep slopes, crossing streams, carrying 2.5-gallon jugs of insecticide, measuring trees, applying chemical at the base of the tree, marking treated trees, and moving onto the next tree. The Member must be able to hike up to 8 miles a day carrying up to 40 lbs of gear in all weather conditions and in steep terrain. 
 &#xa0; 
 Another duty would be exotic plant control. Exotic plant control at Cumberland Gap is almost always accomplished by spraying herbicides. There are two primary methods of exotic plant control performed: 
 
 The first is foliar treatment with a backpack sprayer that carries 2 - 3 gallons of herbicide. Foliar spraying large areas of exotic plants require members to carry this heavy load of herbicide, often in full sun, on slopes in difficult terrain. 
 The second method requires cutting down shrubs and small trees with hand tools and then spraying the stumps with concentrated herbicide solution. 
 
 &#xa0; 
 The member will spend the remainder of their time performing other relevant tasks as assigned. Examples of other duties include bat monitoring, wildlife surveys, and ginseng surveys. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups. 
 Position Benefits:  Living Allowance:  ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $300/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. The Member will be provided with a one-time equipment allowance of $200 for the purchase of field boots. 
 AmeriCorps Education Award:  This position may be eligible for a  900-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($3172.50)  upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment and volunteer service are required. 
 Loan Forbearance:  AmeriCorps members may also be eligible for federal loan forbearance. Additional enrollment steps are required. &#xa0; 
 Public Land Corps Hiring Authority:  Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.  Housing:  IF  there is room in the NPS dormitory, it will be available at no cost to the ACE Member and an allowance equivalent to its rent will be provided. The Member may opt out of NPS housing in favor of their own rental location and a housing allowance of $700/month ($175/week) will be provided, making the total living allowance $475/week. Provided Training/Orientation:  ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Qualifications 
 Required: 
 
 Members must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts. 
 Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. 
 Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group. 
 A valid driver&#39;s license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request). 
 Willing to undergo and must pass a required three-part criminal history check. 
 Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

 Additional Position Requirements: 
 
 Ability to communicate clearly with peer professionals, volunteers, and NPS staff. 
 A personal vehicle is required. 
 The member will be required to hike 5-10 miles per day while carrying up to 40 lbs of gear on uneven and steep terrain, on and off trail, bushwhacking in some cases through rhododendron, mountain laurel, and greenbrier. 
 Must be willing and able to perform the above fieldwork, including backcountry camping. 
 Must be able and comfortable with navigating off-trail by maps and GPS units in the mountains. 
 Must be willing and able to serve in all weather conditions, from 90 degrees Fahrenheit and 90% humidity in full sun in the summer, to freezing temperatures in winter. 
 Must be willing to use herbicides and insecticides, and pass the Kentucky pesticide certification test to apply pesticides in forestry situations. 
 Must be able to serve in a small group setting, performing strenuous duties, while maintaining a positive attitude. 
 Ability to serve independently in remote areas.

 Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor&#39;s degree and/or have relevant experience in natural resource management or other related disciplines.
