 Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering 
 &#xa0; 
 The  College of Engineering &#38; Applied Sciences  (CEAS) at Stony Brook University seeks a highly accomplished scholar and strategic leader to be the Chair of the  Department of Biomedical Engineering  (BME). Serving a renewable five-year term, the Department Chair will b2 a full-time tenured faculty member in BME and, while remaining active in research, will provide sustained strategic leadership of the department. 
 &#xa0; 
 The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) 
 BME is housed between CEAS and Stony Brook&#8217;s School of Medicine, with leadership of the department historically provided by CEAS. Its mission is &#8220;to fully integrate the cutting edge of engineering and physical sciences with state of the art biology to advance our understanding of biomedical problems and to use that science to drive the development of therapeutics, diagnostics and medical devices. The Department &#8230; aims to provide students with an interdisciplinary view of the complex engineering problems facing modern medicine and the specific knowledge and skills necessary for undertaking advanced research and development in the broad field of biomedical engineering.&#8221; 
 &#xa0; 
 The department comprises 22 core faculty, 50 additional faculty beyond the department who collaborate in its education and research programs, and three administrative staff. Fall 2025 enrollments are 222 undergraduate, 33 masters, and 52 PhD students. 
 &#xa0; 
 BME is one of CEAS&#8217; most  research-active departments . In AY2024, the department saw $7M in total research expenditures, $5M of it from federal sources.&#xa0; Its level of research productivity extends into translation and commercialization: in the same year, department-based research led to 59 invention disclosures, 95 patents issued, and 11 IP licenses.&#xa0; 
 &#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0; 
 Strategic Opportunities 
 BME&#8217; new Chair leverage the Stony Brook&#8217;s new all-funds, performance-based budget model to expand the current curricular offerings and develop new forward-looking curricula and degree programs collaborating with other units as appropriate. The Chair will also expand research in the areas of national importance leveraging existing strengths in CEAS or other Stony Brook departments/centers such as those focused on artificial intelligence, medicine and healthcare, energy, quantum information systems, medicine and healthcare, sustainability, and artificial intelligence.

 Qualifications 
 The Chair will be a proven, entrepreneurial leader who can inspire faculty, staff, and students in a shared governance environment. They will have the ability to collaboratively develop a compelling vision to establish DTAS as a hub for research and education and as a site of innovation, teaching, and translation. They will have strong skills for mentoring junior faculty and will promote the interests of the entire department.

 Required: 
 
 An earned doctorate  in a discipline appropriate for a faculty appointment in the College of Engineering &#38; Applied Sciences 
 A distinguished record of research, teaching, and academic mentoring  commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor at Stony Brook University 
 A proven track record of scholarship and the ability to support a vibrant research program along with an outstanding record of professional achievement. 
 Excellent leadership and management abilities  suited to guiding a world-class research and education program

 Preferred: 
 
 Demonstrated academic leadership experience and a strong commitment to collaborative, inclusive, and synergistic leadership that fosters a respectful and supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students at all levels 
 A record of successful administrative experience  including managing personnel, budgets, and academic operations at the department, center/institute, or school/college level 
 A track of record of fund-raising

 Senior researchers from industry or government with a proven track record of scholarship and professional leadership but limited academic experience are also encouraged to apply.

 Appointment terms  
 The Chair will serve a renewable five-year term subject to an appropriately rigorous periodic review.&#xa0; The Chair will have an underlying faculty position as a tenured full professor and will receive an administrative salary supplement and other forms of support during their service as Chair. Elements of the appointment such as underlying faculty salary, teaching load, outside engagements, and summer compensation are commensurate with experience and are negotiable.

 The USDA - ARS, Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU), located on the Geneva, NY&#xa0;Campus of Cornell University, is a component of the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). The PGRU was formed in 1986 by merging the Northeast Regional Plant Introduction Station (NERPIS)&#xa0;and the National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Apple, Tart Cherry&#xa0;and Grape (NGR). The two missions of the PGRU are the preservation of germplasm of selected crop plants and the breeding and improvement of apples.&#xa0; Specific activities include acquisition, documentation, maintenance, characterization, breeding, enhancement and distribution of&#xa0;the assigned crops.&#xa0; PGRU&#xa0;maintains approximately 20,000 different accessions, representing over 300 species.&#xa0;

 Research Project:&#xa0; Participants will have the opportunity to explore genetic variation and investigate the mechanisms underlying key agronomic and disease-related traits across multiple crop species. Research will focus on hemp, onion, tomato, squash, apples, cherries, and grapes, with evaluations conducted in laboratory, greenhouse, and field environments. One&#xa0;project will investigate the collection&#xa0;and storage of hemp pollen.&#xa0; 
 Learning Objectives:&#xa0; Throughout the project, participants will gain hands-on experience and foundational knowledge in:

 Plant phenomics and genomics
