Position description

The Department of NanoEngineering, which combines materials science and chemical engineering applied to nanotechnologies in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD, invites applications for a tenure?track Assistant Professor position. The NanoEngineering Department is committed to building an excellent, diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity). In addition to research, teaching, and general professional and public service, service contributions that promote diversity and equal opportunity are encouraged and given recognition in the evaluation of the candidate's qualifications. Examples include, but are not limited to, developing strategies for the educational or professional advancement of students in underrepresented groups; efforts to advance equitable access and diversity in education; and activities such as recruitment, retention, and mentoring or advising of underrepresented students or new faculty.

New faculty will be expected to build and maintain a strong independent research program in the area of chemical engineering and/or nanoengineering. The research areas of primary interest to the department are: advanced nanomaterials and biomaterials, colloids, assemblies and soft matter, nanocatalysts, nanomanufacturing, nano/microfluidics, surface science, polymer engineering, membranes and separations, etc., with potential applications to healthcare, energy, robotics, sensing, or climate change. The successful candidate will show excellence in scholarship as evidenced by impactful peer-reviewed publications as well as external funding and awards appropriate for the career stage.

The career development of the successful candidate, based on the research interest, may have the opportunity to participate in various school?wide and university?wide initiatives and centers, including the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, Data Science Institute, Contextual Robotics Institute, Center for Nano-Immunoengineering, Center for Wearable Sensors, Sustainable Power and Energy Center, Center for Energy Research, and Materials Research Center, etc.

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels in NanoEngineering and/or Chemical Engineering. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching of NanoEngineering and/or Chemical Engineering undergraduate laboratory courses and other core classes, improvement of curriculum, helping coordination of ABET accreditation activities, development and assessment of new educational initiatives, and serving as the faculty advisor to student organizations.

RANK AND SALARY: Level of appointment and salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on UC pay schedules and market conditions.

Qualifications

Candidates must have advanced to candidacy or earned their Ph.D. degree in engineering (e.g. Chemical Engineering) or related fields at the time of application.
