MECHANICAL ENGINEER, SUSTAINABILITY (Engineer – C)
The New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) builds and renovates public schools throughout all of the boroughs. We believe that schools should be efficiently designed and constructed; they should be safe, attractive and environmentally sound. The SCA’s responsibilities span the life of each project (new schools, additions, and capital improvements to existing schools) from planning, real estate, budgeting, scoping, and designing, to construction completion.
The Sustainable Design and Resiliency team is responsible for updating and implementing the NYC Green Schools Guide Rating System, research and development of standards due to enactment of sustainable laws and incorporation of technology and revisions to the SCA standards as they relate to sustainability and resiliency requirements at the local, state, and federal level that go beyond building energy codes. SCA’s Sustainable Design and Resiliency team is looking for a highly motivated MECHANICAL ENGINEER with experience in sustainable design and energy efficiency.
As the Sustainability Project Engineer, responsibilities will include:
Assist other department(s) on existing building electrification retrofits and other mechanical HVAC related scope;
Manage technical resources, guide interdisciplinary team, participate in development of technical resources required to properly include sustainable design and resiliency scope and design to projects;
Perform energy modeling and mechanical engineering calculations;
Assist in reviews of project Energy modeling and the development of SCA’s energy modeling standards;
Ensure Sustainability Consultant’s adherence to the schedule, budget, and/or standards;
Attend and participate in Capacity and Technical Discipline meetings; develop documentation & training;
Liaison with stakeholders and research new materials and products to align with agency and departmental goals;
Foster inter-studio communication and collaboration on Design Requirements and other Standards;
Lead interagency work to improve/update/reconsider sustainability and resiliency regulatory requirements;
Inform the Sustainable Design Manager of project status and notify of issues that may impact projects;
Chair or participate in research studies and meetings such as, kickoffs, progress, and quality control;
Review scope of work, design documents, and on-going construction for existing building electrification projects;
Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures.
Minimum Requirement:
Baccalaureate degree plus six years of full-time paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; three years must be as a project engineer; project, team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility.
Professional Engineer - NYS Department of Education
LEED AP BD+C required within 6 months of being hired, and to be maintained for duration of employment.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
Energy modeling experience (eQuest or equivalent). Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD). Member of the Green Schools Guide Committee and assists the implementation of the GSG process. Understand or has a strong willingness to learn decarbonization, electrification, and resilient mechanical design technologies.

With less than two years of active City or SCA service: Appointment Rate Salary: $88,335 - $124,797
With at least two years of active and continuous City or SCA service: Incumbent Rate Salary: $101,585 - $143,517
