This position will lead our Traffic Engineering team within the Division of Traffic Management. The team’s responsibilities include safety studies, traffic impact studies, site plan review, signage and markings, temporary traffic control, signal warrant analysis, and traffic operations engineering. The team is also involved in larger initiatives such as LinkUS and Vision Zero Columbus.
Under general direction, is responsible for directing the activities of a major engineering section and/or performing highly-complex professional engineering work; performs related duties as required.

- Directs the activities of an engineering unit involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance, or operation of Capital Improvement Projects and/or private developments;
- Supervises professional engineers and managerial staff involved in responsible engineering activities and studies; directs the development of standards for operating procedures and for elements in engineering design;
- Provides instruction to professional and paraprofessional engineering personnel
- Designs and prepares or directs others in the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contracts for highly-complex and/or specialized public works projects, construction, and/or maintenance projects;
- Reviews and makes recommendations regarding engineering plans and changes to plans;
- Provides engineering guidance in the development of long-range plans for departmental projects or capital improvements;
- Confers with superiors, contractors, and property owners regarding problems associated with engineering projects;
- Represents the division by speaking about engineering projects and solutions in meetings with a variety of audiences such as for special project and area civic associations as well as with state, county, and municipal organizations, consulting engineering groups, and contractors;
- Prepares narrative or technical reports regarding engineering projects or programs such as those for the Environmental Protection Agency, Smart City, or for stakeholder reviews;
- Initiates correspondence; maintains comprehensive engineering files
- Prepares data for CIP and operating budget;
- Administers consultant contracts; prepares contract modifications as necessary;
- Stays abreast of current engineering principles.
Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer and five (5) years of experience as a Professional Engineer in responsible charge of engineering work, two (2) years of which must have been supervisory over Professional Engineers or multiple major engineering projects. Substitution(s): Ten (10) years of practical engineering experience, which includes three (3) years as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) and two (2) years of experience supervising Professional Engineers.
Specialization in the discipline for which appointment is being made may be required for some positions and will be incorporated in the job postings, as appropriate.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Professional experience is defined as responsible and significant engineering work performed after registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.). Practical experience is defined as responsible and significant engineering work performed after graduation from an accredited degreed engineering curriculum.
