Job Description:
Professional Engineer position that provides engineering services and makes engineering decisions for a section that supports the success of one or more of the District's strategic programs. Engineering services and decisions are based on a comprehensive knowledge and consistent application of theories, precepts, concepts, and practices related to hydraulic and hydrologic engineering. The incumbent plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases of moderate to complex engineering projects or processes. Additionally, the incumbent performs work that requires the application of both conventional and innovative engineering practices. He/she receives direction from the supervisor for complex or unfamiliar problems and developments, and work products are reviewed to ensure the application of sound engineering judgment. The incumbent is responsible for keeping his/her immediate supervisor current on the status of deliverables and assignments and for providing technical coaching to less seasoned engineering staff. He/she may also represent the Hydrology and Hydraulics Bureau on resource area taskforces.
This position is primarily responsible for conducting canal conveyance studies mandated by the District's Canal Conveyance Capacity Program. Duties will primarily include, but not be limited to, researching and compiling design data and criteria for C & SF system canals; reviewing and verifying original canal design capacity analyses; constructing and calibrating hydraulic models; determining the current capacities of canals with respect to original and current design criteria; establishing and documenting changes in canal capacities; and making recommendations for channel improvements. The incumbent may also perform level of service evaluations of watersheds, flow rating analyses of water control structures, and prepare or review the hydraulic designs of water control structures, impoundments, canals and pipelines.
Ideally, the incumbent should be knowledgeable and experienced in the following: performing water surface profile and flood routing computations in open-channels; interpreting design and as-built drawings; reviewing and preparing the hydraulic and hydrologic designs of major water control structures; and developing, applying, and interpreting the results of hydrologic and hydraulic models that are based on standard software such as HECRAS, HECHMS, MIKE11, MIKESHE, etc. Familiarity with the operational protocol of major SFWMD and USACE structures is also desirable.
Employment Guidelines Has a Bachelor's Degree from an ABET/EAC accredited program and at least six (6) years of experience that (i) demonstrates measurable career progression within the water resources engineering discipline, and (ii) can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives is required. Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced engineering degree. Acceptable disciplines for engineering education include Agricultural, Civil, Environmental, and other water-related engineering fields.
Licensure Requirements Professional Engineer License by the State of Florida along with a valid State of Florida Driver's License. Applicants with a Professional Engineer license from another state with reciprocal jurisdiction may be considered and, if hired, will be required to obtain a Florida Professional Engineer license within six (6) months of the hire date.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
